Truck Transport Mechanic

Job Location: Thompson, Manitoba
Type: Permanent, Full Time
Report to: HE Shop Manager
Job Summary: Repair, troubleshoot, adjust, overhaul, and maintain mobile heavy-duty equipment used in construction.

Automotive Mechanic

Job Location: Thompson Shop
Report to: Truck Shop Supervisor
Job Summary: Diagnose and perform general maintenance and repair.
Hours: Minimum 50 hours per week, schedule and hours of work to be determined (Potential for Monday to Friday or rotational schedule).

Overview

Smook Contractors Ltd. is seeking a skilled Automotive or Truck Transport Mechanic to join our team. This role is essential for ensuring the reliability and performance of our fleet through expert maintenance and repair. Ideal candidates will have a strong foundation in mechanical practices, a commitment to safety, and a willingness to work in varied conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Use hand-tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
  • Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and re-assemble equipment.
  • Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
  • Test mechanical products or equipment.
  • Maintain or repair work tools or equipment.
  • Must have own tools.
  • Follow safe work procedures.
  • Follow PPE requirements based on location, task, policies, procedures, and Safety Data Sheets

Class 1A Truck Driver

Job Location: Based out of Thompson, MB
Report to: Field Crew Supervisors
Job Summary: Operate tandem axle winch truck and associated trailers to move both heavy equipment and support equipment.
Hours: 12 hour shifts; shift work

Overview

Join our logistics team as a Class 1A Winch Truck Driver, a role critical for the transportation and movement of heavy machinery and equipment. You will be at the heart of operations, ensuring that our project components are delivered safely and efficiently, leveraging your driving skills to bolster our field activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-trip inspection daily of truck and trailers.
  • Check and fill all fluids as required daily, keep equipment clean. Lubricate equipment as required.
  • Perform basic routine maintenance.
  • Load, secure and transport various heavy equipment pieces.
  • Transport oversized aggregate crushing equipment.
  • Tie down and properly secure loads within compliance and safety regulations.
  • Maintain paperwork relating to time, pre-trip, logs etc.

As a Loader Operator at Smook Contractors Ltd., you are on the frontline of our construction and quarrying operations. Your skill in maneuvering heavy machinery contributes significantly to the efficiency and success of our projects. Responsibilities

  • Operate Loaders in different construction quarrying/mining applications.

Mining Coordinator

Job Location: Thompson & surrounding area
Report to: Vice President & General Manager
Job Summary: Responsible for the management of all Mine site activities including but not limited to safety, productivity, and budget as per the contract, drawings, specification, and schedule.
Hours: 50 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with overtime as required

Overview

Smook Contractors Ltd. is seeking an experienced Mining Superintendent to lead our mine site operations. This pivotal role oversees safety, productivity, and budget compliance across all activities on mine property. Ideal candidates will bring a proven track record in the mining and construction industries, demonstrating strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the activities for all Mine Site Operations including resources from several internal departments to support the needs of the customer and business.
  • Review and prepare tender submissions, estimates & quotes.
  • Manage all operational contracts, capital projects, and work requests on Mine property.
  • Monitor production rates to ensure projects are on target for safety, budget & schedule.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture within the work group by encouraging the identification of hazards and developing quality corrective actions by implementing effective changes to procedures, training, and equipment when deemed necessary.
  • Manage the safety program through the identification of safety concerns on the job site and instituting effective corrective actions.
  • Monitor, track, and promote daily and monthly safety activities with the goal of zero harm as a guiding principle.
  • Identification of any changes in conditions which will require a change in the scope of work and notify the respective Manager.
  • Examine and inspect work progress, equipment, and construction sites to verify safety and to ensure that all legal, customer, and company specifications are adhered to.
  • Record information such as personnel, production, and operational data on specified forms and reports.
  • Promote and assist in the training & development of all employees. Schedule & coordinate site-specific training for employees and subcontractors.
  • Manages a program of preventative maintenance and repair of equipment in the field in accordance with production needs and company policies and objectives.
  • Participate in and complete annual performance assessments for direct reports including supervisors, operators, drivers, and laborers.
  • Manage employee behaviours through the use of corrective actions by utilizing coaching and counselling and disciplinary actions as required.
  • Ensure adherence to Smook Contractors policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Gold Seal Certification (Superintendent Designation) from the Canadian Construction Association preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Mines and Regulations Act & Workplace Safety & Health Act.
  • Minimum of 10 years in the construction industry preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years supervisory experience in the Mining industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and organize work.
  • Excellent ability to read, analyze, generate, and interpret drawings.

  • Maintain hygiene programs including noise, air quality & ergonomics.
  • Manage all medical monitoring programs for employees.
  • Collaborate with engineers and physicians on control and remedial measures for hazardous conditions.
  • Recommend improvements to work methods or procedures.
  • Develop and manage the department budget.
  • Direct reports include the HSE Field Advisor and HSE Administrator.

Requirements, Education, Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • 5 years leadership experience related to Health, Safety & Environment.
  • NCSO designation is preferred.
  • COR Leadership or similar certifications (Accident Investigation, Inspections, Job Hazard Assessments).
  • COR Auditor or similar certification.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver’s license.
